Phasmophobia (2020) Game Review (BETA)

System: PC Publisher: Kinetic Games | Developer: Kinetic Games

|Released: September 2020

The following review is based on the optional BETA version which can be accessed through the settings in Steam. This was also written from the state of the game on the 10th March 2021

Phasmophobia is a highly popular indie horror game that launched in March 2020 and became one of the biggest streamed games of September and October on Twitch and YouTube. The game is currently in its early access/beta phase and can be played solo or up to 4 people online and also includes VR support.

The aim of the game is simple, find out which room the ghost haunts and then use equipment to find out which type of ghost it is and then get the hell out! You earn money from completing missions and extra objectives which will help you purchase different types of gear to help you in your next haunting

The game also beat Baldurs Gate 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 pre-orders on steam. To add to the success of the game, It was developed and published by Kinetic Games which has only 1 member on the team who goes by the name 'Dknighter'. He has released numerous patches for the game and hopes to release a full version later in 2021.

Graphically the game is nothing amazing, using some stock textures and models from the Unity Engine along with some other custom content. The lighting and shadows present in the game are pretty impressive and can be enhanced using a mod to boost the quality. Animations are pretty standard and could use improvement but they don't take away much from the experience and can quite often lead to comedic moments.

The audio can be amazing and also disappointing, one of the best features of the game is the proximity chat and global chat. The asylum mad really adds to the proximity chat as there is a nice reverb filter in place but only occurs on this map and does not feature on the prison and high school which are also large maps.

The global chat uses a radio which each team member has equipped and has a really cool radio filter on top of it, sometimes it can be a little glitchy and cut off at times during a sentence but works well most of the time. Also when using VR, if you equip the camera headset to your character then I have to be unable to use the radio.

Without going into much more detail because I don't want to ruin anyone's experience with this amazing title. I will say that your first 10-15 hours playing this game will make up for most of your scariest gaming moments. The teamwork and mechanics are a massive aspect of the game and work well together, the game is still in early access and has a lot of updates planned. With that said though, you ensure you are getting your value for money!

There will be an updated review when the full game is released
